DAY 19 — Thursday, Sep 18, 2025
Today’s journey started with an unusually short but steep climb to the very top of Montefiascone that served as defensive castle and papal residence. The views were magnificent. A steep descent followed that gradually became a gentle downhill. The most fascinating part of the trail over large payoff it was the Roman paving technique: layered with the final layer consisting of tightly fitted, large, flat, carefully cut stones. Since some of these protruded a few inches above their neighbors, I took great care with foot placement.
Pellegrinos are welcomed to Viterbo by artwork in the middle of a roundabout. My exploration of this city begins tomorrow, my last rest day before Rome.
